TitleKleczkowski, Alfred Alexander Peter: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDistinguished for his work on viruses, in immunology and photobiology. Highly versatile, he has made original contributions to an unusually wide range of subjects. Notable among his immunological work is the discovery that antibodies and some antigens can combine with other proteins to form complexes with new serological characteristics that explain the long-known differences in behaviour between somatic and flagellar antigens. In addition to developing statistical methods for analysing infectivity assays, he has identified virus inhibitors, indicated how some act, and has provided much information about virus multiplication and about the structure and properties of virus components. His achievements in photobiology include the discovery that damage to higher plants by ultraviolet radiation is counteracted by visible light and that, whereas irradiated tobacco mosaic virus cannot be photoreactivated, its nucleic acid can be.
