CitationDistinguished for his contributions to the study of intermolecular forces and molecular properties. His work on gaseous virial coefficients clearly demonstrated the limitations of the central force-field model and the importance of quadrupolar interactions in nonspherical molecules. His study of relaxation phenomena near the temperature of phase transition led to the discovery of the anomalous ultrasonic absorption in the transition region. Investigations of molecular complex formation led to the discovery of weak hydrogen bonds formed with pi-electron donor molecules. His work in high resolution proton magnetic resonance has resulted in a number of important contributions to structural chemistry, proton exchange behaviour and hydrogen bonding. Studies of the luminescence and photoconduction in single crystals of aromatic hydrocarbons have greatly advanced our understanding of energy transfer and pi-electron conduction in these materials.
