TitleBarber, Horace Newton: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationOne of the most enterprising experimenters in the fields of cytology and genetics. His measurements and experiments were crucial in deciding how the centromere organizes the spindle at mitosis and how it organizes the pairing of chromosomes in the resting nucleus at meiosis. He broke new ground in showing the interactions of nucleus and cytoplasm in pollen grains under natural and experimental conditions, and later again in examining the evolution of sex chromosomes in marsupials. He has applied genetic and cytological principles to the study of the variation and evolution in space and time, dealing in an original way with post-glacial colonisation and inter-continental migration in plants and animals. Recently he has designed and carried out genetic experiments which have thrown new light on the physiology of photoperiodism. His work reveals an unusual combination of theoretical range, technical skill and critical judgement.
