TitleKuchermann, Dietrich: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDistinguished for theoretical and experimental work in several branches of aerodynamics. His contributions began at Gottingen; at Farnborough his studies of swept wings in combination with bodies have profoundly influenced current high speed design. He is a leading exponent of the proposal to use, rather than suppress, flow separation at leading edges; and since 1955 he has been in successful charge of a large body of aerodynamic research specifically aimed at the design of a supersonic air-liner. In all his work airframe and engine are treated as aerodynamic partners: witness his text book (with J Weber) on Aerodynamics of Propulsion, the first of its kind.
