CitationDistinguished for his studies of synaptic and secretory mechanisms. He showed that botulinum toxin acts by preventing acetylcholine release at nerve endings; related the toxicity of organophosphorous cholinesterase inhibitors to phosphorylation of the enzyme; and by analysing the effect of acetylcholine on atrial membrane of potentials was able to attribute vagal inhibition to increase of potassium flux. He elucidated the respective roles of acini and ducts in salivary secretion, showing that non-electrolytes enter saliva by solvation in cell membranes and by passage through pores some of which are under sympathetic control, while various ions are accumulated or transported under parasympathetic control at segregated transfer sites in the ducts. He showed that the formation and the renewal of pleural fluid are independent processes and analysed the rate-controlling factors for each.
