DescriptionCitation typed
CitationCOOPER, Leslie Hugh Norman (Plymouth). Ph.D, D.Sc (Wales). Chemist at the Plymouth Laboratory of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom. Distinguished for his detailed and comprehensive studies of the Chemistry and Physics of sea-water, and for his fundamental researches into the part played by inorganic and organic nutrients and trace constituents in the promotion of growth of planktonic plants. He has made outstanding contributions to knowledge of nutrient cycles in the sea and of factors which influence biological productivity. His work in the oceanography of the English Channel, the Celtic Sea and the neighbouring ocean is the foundation of profitable studies of the ecology of the region and of the variations in plankton and fish populations. His original and purposeful measurements of fine structure in the distribution of physical and chemical properties in deep water off the European continental slope is playing an important part in the present campaign to gain better understanding of the general circulation of the oceans.
