TitlePorter, Rodney Robert: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished as a biochemist and particularly for his work on proteolytic enzymes and on antibodies. Using chromatographic methods developed by himself he has effected the first fractionation of antibodies, including regains, and has thus advanced knowledge of the immunisation process. He has shown that antibody globulin can be split by papain into three fractions, one (crystalline) retaining the antigenic properties of the protein, and the other two its antibody activity; this discovery is one of the most important recent advances in immunochemistry. He has also contributed greatly to enzyme biochemistry by the discovery of two new enzymes associated with pepsin, and by the characterisation of the cathepsins of the spleen. His work throughout shows originality and boldness of approach.
