CitationDistinguished for his contributions to the embryology of seed-plants, in which field he is the leading authority. Through the steady accumulation of published research by himself and his research school he has over a period of 30 years advanced this difficult subject to the level in which it is becoming a criterion of systematic botany. His international reputation is established as editor of Phytomorphology since its foundation (1951). His leading position in plant-morphology in India is shown by the eminent presidencies he has held there since 1950 text-book on Angiosperm embryology is outstanding for its clearness. He is now promoting experimental embryology in India.
