TitleBattersby, Alan Rushton - Certificate of election as Fellow of the Royal Society: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished as an organic chemist. He notably increased our knowledge of the plant alkaloids. His work on emetins and derivatives culminated in the synthesis of rubremetinium bromide and in the isolation, as a minor ipecacuanha alkaloid, of an aldehyde earlier postulated as an intermediate in biogenesis of emetine. This dramatic result was followed by equally surprising successes in the identification of biogenetic precursors, using radioactive tracers. He proved that the plant can make morphine from norlaudanosoline and extended similar investigations with striking results (for example biogenesis of lycorine). He is internationally regarded as pioneer in experimental biogenetic studies.
