TitleBenjamin, Thomas Brooke: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationHe has shown a remarkable combination of theoretical and experimental ability in tackling a wide range of problems in fluid dynamics, and has distinguished himself as both applied mathematician and engineer. All his work reveals physical insight, great originality and clarity of thought. In a series of definitive and elegant papers, he has made notable contributions to knowledge of open-channel hydraulics, and in particular undular bores, solitary waves and the flow due to obstacles in stream; cavitation in water and the pressure waves from collapsing cavities; the stability of flow near a rigid wall which is either rigidly wavy or flexible; the stability of moving liquid layers on walls; the vortex breakdown phenomenon; and the dynamics of a system of articulated pipes conveying fluid. A list of papers is appended.
