TitleDavies, Robert Ernest: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationMade important contributions to the elucidation of the mechanism of HC1 secretion by gastric mucosa, and of active transport of ions generally. Established equivalence between HC1 and bicarbonate production in gastric mucosa and clarified the role of carbonic anhydrase in HC1 secretion. Analysed relations between electric phenomena and gastric HC1 production. Developed a general theory of secretion. Investigated, by quantitative measurements, the relations between metabolism and the movements of ions and water in animal and plant tissues. More recently proved by direct measurements that ATP is used during a single contraction of the living stimulated muscle. The breakdown of ATP is linearly related to the external work done and is used at about 40% efficiency. Developed molecular theory of muscular contraction which accounts for many known facts. A list of 155 publications is attached.
