TitleForrest, John Samuel: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his work on electrical power transmission at high voltages. He has played an active part in the development of the 132-kV, 275-kV and 400-kV National Grid transmission systems.
In 1940 he established at Leatherhead the first laboratory of the Central Electricity Board for transmission research.
His special study of electrical insulation has led to a better understanding of the mechanism of insulation breakdown, and to improved designs of high-voltage insulators. The techniques developed and the design criteria formulated have been adopted in many countries.
He was President of Section A (Mathematics and Physics) of the B.A. in 1963; Faraday Lecturer of the Institution of Electrical Engineers in 1963-64 and has been appointed a Visiting Professor in the University of Strathclyde.
