TitleIsaacs, Alick: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his work on influenza viruses. His studies on virus interference over 7 years led to the discovery of Interferon, a protein elaborated in cells under the stimulus of live or killed viruses and inhibiting intracellular multiplication even of unrelated viruses. This unfamiliar mechanism may explain how virus infections can be halted, and a possible new approach to virus-chemotherapy is opened up. Isaacs has charge of the central World Influenza Laboratory (W. H.O.) and has contributed greatly to knowledge of antigenic changes in relation to epidemiology. Other important work concerns morphology and other properties of influenza viruses.
