CitationKnowles' researches played a leading part in the discovery of neurosecretion in crustaceans. In 1951 he described for the first time a crustacean neurohaemal organ, the post-commissure organ, and gave the first precise indication of neurosecretion in crustaceans by demonstrating a correlation between hormonal activity and stainable material in nerve fibres.
In 1954 Knowles directed a team which achieved the first effective isolation of crustacean neurosecretory hormones, and identified these as peptides.
Recently Knowles has made the important discovery that changes in ultrastructure accompany neurosecretion. He has demonstrated reticular systems, originating from mitochondria, within which hormonal material assembles, apparently as uniform inclusions, each comprising a crystal-like arrangement of particles of molecular size. His work has opened up exciting new fields, and is always marked by distinction.
