CitationDistinguished for his leadership and inspiration in the development and co-ordination of marine research, especially in relation to the fisheries. Under his direction the fisheries research laboratory at Aberdeen has assumed a major position in international research and has contributed much towards basic knowledge of the conditions for life in the sea and of the biology of fish. His direction also covers the freshwater laboratory at Pitlochry.
He has served on many national and international committees and plays a leading part in the co-ordination of international marine science as Chairman of a number of controlling committees in the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, the International Commission for the North Food and Agriculture Organisation and the Liaison Committee with the permanent Commission of the 1946 Fisheries Convention.
He has himself been engaged in research on the ecology of plankton and has especially encouraged investigations on the part played by external metabolites in the biology of the sea.
