CitationProfessor McGee is an applied Physicist with a distinguished record of successful invention in the field of electron optical instrumentation, first in industry but latterly at Imperial College.
In the pre- and immediately post-war periods he devised and developed highly successful television camera tubes including the tubes used in the first B.B.C. television service. Jointly with the late A.D. Blumlein he discovered the principle of 'cathode potential stabilisation' and developed a highly successful high sensitivity camera tube which is still extensively used.
During the war he made major contributions to the development of infra red image converters.
More recently he has been primarily concerned with image intensifier tubes with applications to astronomy, medical X-ray examinations, and many other fields of scientific research.
He has amply demonstrated his ability to invent new and useful instruments and to stimulate inventiveness in his colleagues, and has shown outstanding ingenuity in the development of new constructional techniques.
The main evidence of his success is to be found in the widespread use of his instruments, which, due to requirements of commercial secrecy, are only partially covered in the list of 36 publications appended. In addition he has 72 published patents.
