TitleSutton, John: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his researches in the Pre-Cambrian and Caledonian orogenic belts of the Scottish Highlands. He showed, with Dr. Janet Watson, that the Lewisian gneisses represent fragments of two Pre-Cambrian zones of widely different ages, a concept which has recently received support from age-determinations. In the Caledonian orogenic belt he initiated the re-mapping of critical areas in the Moine Series and has played the dominant part in co-ordinating the results of a group of geologists working there; this work has contributed to a new interpretation of the stratigraphy and structure of the Moine Series and has led to a re-assessment of the structural relationships between Moinian and the Lewisian basement in the interior zone of the Caledonides. He has developed the study of small-scale structures in relation to larger-scale tectonic and metamorphonic phenomena and has shown the value of such studies in elucidating the history of regions of repeated or complex deformation in various parts of the Moine and Dalradian Highlands and in Tanganyika. Finally, he has used the sedimentation-characters of certain Scottish Pre-Cambrian formations to establish their environments of deposition.
