TitleBlaxter, Kenneth Lyon: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his researches on ruminant metabolism. In refined and extensive calorimetric experiments he has provided quantitative data on the energy requirements of ruminants and the utilisation of that energy for movement, maintenance of body temperature, and during the processes of growth, fattening and (in sheep) wool production. His experiments have been carried out both with animals in an equable environment and also in natural environments with exposure to varying temperatures, air velocities and infra-red and solar radiation. Blaxter's fundamental work has provided an improved basis for the quantitative rationing of livestock, a new system for which he has devised. He has made notable contributions to knowledge of amino acid, mineral element and vitamin deficiency in calves and has also shown that both vitamin E and selenium are dietary essentials to protect cattle against muscular dystrophy.
