TitleGarrett, Stephen Denis: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationMycologist and Plant Pathologist. Distinguished for his work on the ecology of fungi in the soil, especially on the ecological behaviour of root-infecting pathogens. His pioneer studies of Take-all disease of wheat, which now provide an outstanding model for the ecological study of soil-borne disease, led him to investigate the interactions of organisms in the soil and to an ecological classification of soil fungi. His recognition of 'Soil inhabitants' and 'Root inhabitants' and his concepts of 'Competitive saprophytic ability' and 'Inoculum potential' have had a unifying effect on the investigation of the ecology of pathogens and have been a powerful force in plant pathological investigations the world over. He is author of several monographs of which 'Root Disease fungi' and 'Biology of Root-Infecting Fungi' have been most influential.
