TitleIssigonis, Alec Arnold Constantine: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed. Letter attached to certificate.
CitationIssigonis' original ideas have led to a revolution in the design of small motor cars. His first major design was the post-war Morris Minor, which is still in production after the record number of over 1 million cars have been manufactured. This car had exceptionally good handling characteristics and from it Issigonis developed the famous "Mini" range. The "Mini" is now (1966) only the second British car of which over one million vehicles have been produced. The radically original design of these cars is due to him and stems from his intuitive understanding of fundamental principles. This, aided by his exceptional ability at conveying new design concepts by free-hand sketches, places his work on a par with the classical achievements of Brunel. His designs are now made under licence on the Continent and two successful larger models have been introduced base upon the transverse-engine principle which Issigonis first introduced in the "Mini".
