CitationDistinguished for his contributions in Government Research and in Industry. With A.S. Reeves devised and developed radar blind bombing system ('Oboe') at T.R.E., and improvements ('Trinity' and 'Delta') for which he received a Civil Service Commission Award to Inventors, 1958. From 1945 directed investigations in Basic Research Division (TRE) on detection and properties of infra-red and millimetre-wave radiation including atmospheric transmission; made very accurate measurements of propagation velocity of electro-magnetic radiation at radio frequencies and studied applications of radar in meteorology: became Deputy Head of the Division (later Physics Department, R.R.E.). In 1953-6, as Chief Scientific Officer and Deputy Director, A.A.E. (Farnborough), initiated joint rocket programme with Royal Society for exploration of upper atmosphere, and study of orbiting satellite (with King-Hele). He is successfully applying his imaginative technological ability and his powers of leadership and management in a competitive and rapidly advancing section of the industry.
