TitleSeaton, Michael John: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to quantal collision theory and in particular for his work on processes of importance in aeronomy and in astrophysics. He has developed methods for calculating the cross sections for the excitation of permitted and forbidden atomic lines, for photoionization and recombination. Using the results of his calculations, he has explained interesting aspects of airglow and auroral spectra and has derived information on the structure of the Earth's upper atmosphere. The studies he has made of the spectra of gaseous nebulae have provided improved estimates of temperatures, densities, chemical composition and ultra-violet radiation fields. His researches are characterized by their great thoroughness. A list of 53 papers is appended.
