TitleBateman, Leslie Clifford: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDr. Bateman joined the staff of the then British Rubber Producers Research Association in 1941. There he did work of fundamental importance in the Chemistry of rubber, the magnitude and versatility of which is evident from the appended list of publications, notably the book he edited. He was appointed Director of the Association in 1953 and his guidance and inspiration did much to add to the very high standing of the R.A. scientifically and in its industrial impact. In 1962 he was appointed Controller of Rubber Research and Chairman of the Malayan Rubber Fund Board. This involves management of a world-wide programme of research and its application, embracing two large research institutes and extending from plant-breeding to rubber technology and interaction with the economy of Malaysia. He has been outstandingly successful in this post with its unique Commonwealth link, It is this combination of high scientific ability and scientific management in the broadest sense of the term that makes the case for his being a general candidate.
