TitleCookson, Richard Clive: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationR.C. Cookson's early work, in main part in collaboration with Dr. F.G. Mann, F.R.S., was devoted to novel preparation chemistry and its theoretical significance. He then started a new field of investigation, the relationship between low intensity molecular extinction coefficients and molecular structure, which rapidly brought him international fame. A second field of investigation which produced similar recognition was that of organic photochemistry, leading to completely novel and unexpected structures. In recent years optical rotatory dispersion and circular dichroism studies have complemented his earlier work on ultraviolet absorption. Cookson has made contributions to many branches of organic chemistry, his work always being characterised by originality and elegance.
