TitleGoodwin, Trevor Walworth: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his work on carotenoids. He shared in the early post-war work at Liverpool which showed that the retinenes were the aldehydes of vitamins A, that beta-carotene and retinene-1 were converted to vitamin A-1 in intestinal mucosae and that vitamins A could be converted to retinenes by manganese dioxide. He has improved the methods for separating and identifying carotenoids and has made many contributions to the study of the distribution of carotenoids in algae, bacteria, fungi, marine organisms, leaves, roots, flower petals and fruits. An important series of papers has dealt with carotenoid and other pigments in the two locust species, Locusta and Schistocerca. Another sustained and successful investigation concerned the biosynthesis of Radioactive carbon (14-CO-2, "-14C-acetate, 2-14 C-mevalonate) have been used in studies using a number of carotenogenic systems including tomato slices, carrot roots and fungi. More recently a series of contributions has been made on nitrogen metabolism and riboflavin biosynthesis in Eremothecium ashbyii. The relation of purine metabolism to flavinogenesis has been clarified; a new route for biosynthesis of the aromatic ring has been demonstrated via 2-14C-acetoin. A list of 136 publications is appended.
