TitleRees, David: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationDistinguished for his researches in several branches of modern algebra. He was a pioneer in the earlier developments of semigroup-theory and his paper of 1940 on that subject remains a classic. He has contributed significantly to the study of non-associative algebras. But his main work in recent years has been in the ideal theory of commutative rings. In a long series of papers he has developed many novel ideas and results and is now widely regarded as a foremost authority in this field.
