TitleRichardson, Frederick Denys: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his work in applying thermodynamics and reaction kinetics to the smelting and refining process of metallurgy. Founder in 1950 of the Nuffield Research Group in Extraction Metallurgy, now the leading centre in this field. His own work and that of his collaborators have given a comprehensive theoretical and observational picture of the behaviour of a wide range of metal solutions in relation to sulphide, oxide, silicate and other more complex melts. New and improved techniques for studying equilibria in the region 1000-2000 degrees centigrade have been developed. Apart from its metallurgical significance, this work represents a notable contribution to the general physical chemistry of high temperature systems.
