TitleWilliamson, David Theodore Nelson: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationWilliamson was a leading member of the Ferranti team working on the numerical control of machine tools. His thinking was always ahead of what others in the field regarded as being immediately practicable and he was one of the first to apply the Moire Fringe technique to the precise determination of position. In 1961 he joined the Molins Machine Company. In addition to supervising the considerable day to day work which this involved - he established a team to work on an advanced project for a numerically controlled Machine Tool system. He has developed a Kinematic concept for a new generation of numerically controlled tools with Pelton wheel drive for the cutters with integral speed control, and very precise position control.
The Candidate is perhaps most widely known as the originator of the "Williamson Amplifier" which swept the American "Hi Fi" market. It is important to recognise that his work in this field was distinguished from that of many contemporaries in being based on sound scientific principles.
