| Citation | Distinguished for his work on the geology of Canada and for his contributions to theories about the large scale history of the earth. Wilson started his career in the Geological Survey of Canada and was, jointly with others, responsible for twelve sheets of their geological map and for several papers on glacial geology. During the war he became Director of Operational Research to the Canadian Army and retired with the rank of Colonel. In 1946 he became professor at Toronto University and is now Director of the Institute of Earth Sciences there. At first his main interest was in the subdivision and structural lines of the Canadian pre-Cambrian shield. This led to an interest in geochronology and to the setting up of a group for dating rocks which has done much to elucidate the relations between the different parts of the Shield and establish correlation with other areas. More recently he has studied the structures of the ocean floor and has made many fruitful suggestions and stimulating hypotheses. In particular, he has discussed the origin of the "aseismic ridges" and the age patterns of oceanic islands in relation to continental drift. Very recently he has given an illuminating discussion of what happens at the end of a transcurrent fault. He has been President of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics. He has written about one hundred and twenty papers and three books. |
