TitleChesters, John Hugh: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his application of scientific methods to the solution of industrial problems. His work on steel-works refractories led to the development of the stabilised dolomite brick. He applied aerodynamic and water model techniques to the study of the operation of open hearth furnaces. The resulting improvements in design gave furnaces of higher productivity, greater durability and reduced fuel consumption. For this work he received the R.W. Hunt Award of the A.I.M.M.E. He has examined the various human factors involved in the successful prosecution of industrial research, the operation of pilot plants and the subsequent works scale exploitation. Chesters has written some 130 papers and articles and his book "Steel Plant Refractories" has international standing. He was awarded the Robert Hadfield Medal in 1946 and the Bessemer Medal in 1964.
