TitleCooke, George William: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his important contributions to knowledge about the chemical and physical conditions of soils and the response of crops to fertilisers. His work has defined the conditions in which fertilisers and organic manures produce worth-while responses and it application has not only increased crop yields in Britain by increasing the use of fertilisers, but has also greatly enhanced the efficiency with which they are used. Of world-wide significance is his timely book, The Control of Soil Fertility, a masterly account of the factors that limit crop growth and of how applied chemistry can help to overcome them.
