TitleFatt, Paul: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCeertificate of Election
Citation typed. Letter attached to certificate.
CitationDistinguished for his studies of nerve and muscle. He was jointly responsible for several important advances in the fields of neuro-muscular and central-nervous transmission. These are: (i) the intra-cellular recording of the end-plate potential and the analysis of the underlying permeability change; (ii) the discovery of spontaneous miniature end-plate potentials and of the quantal secretion of acetyl-choline from motor nerve terminals; (iii) the ionic mechanism of inhibitory potentials in crustacean muscle and spinal motoneurons, and the presence of a cholinergic relay in this negative feedback circuit; (v) the discovery of the presence of an inter-neurone in even the most direct inhibitory reflex pathways; (Vi) the role of divalent cations in the production of action potentials in crustacean muscle; (vii) the analysis of the large membrane capacity of frog muscle, indicating that the sarcoplasmic reticulum presents an extension of the cell surface.
