TitleGibson, Quentin Howieson: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his development of stopped-flow and flash photolysis techniques and their application to haemoglobin-ligand reactions and more recently to enzyme kinetics, including the study of flavoproteins and of cytochrome oxidase. His isolation of the kinetics of the first and fourth of the four-stage reactions of oxygen and carbon monoxide with haemoglobin has been specially fruitful. In earlier work he showed that idiopathic methaemoglobinaemia is due to an inherited enzyme defect, proposed a scheme for methaemoglobulin reduction and localised the biochemical lesion. Miscellaneous work has included studies on amino-acid absorption from the intestine, haemoglobin standardisation, lactic acid determination and pyruvate metabolism.
