TitleMapson, Leslie William: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed. Letter attached to certificate.
CitationDr. Mapson is well known for his distinguished work on the biochemistry of ascorbic acid, particularly in plants. He originally developed an accurate method for the determination of both ascorbic acid and dehydro-ascorbic acid in plant tissues. He brilliantly elucidated the biosynthesis of ascorbate. The enzymes associated with the process have been characterized by him in cell-free systems. He greatly extended the knowledge of the enzymes connected with the reduction and oxidation processes involving ascorbate His experimental work, which he is actively continuing, has already made a basis for further important developments in the knowledge of plant physiology. In addition to the more strictly biochemical approach, his work has an important bearing on those responses of green plants to light which are connected with their photosynthetic mechanism and their photoperiodism. To the problem of the formation of ethylene by ripening fruits he has made notable biochemical contributions, showing how certain ethylene-producing mechanisms in vitro depend for their activity on the presence of ascorbate and other compounds. It is now apparent that through Mapson's contributions the significance of ascorbic acid in relation to the physiology of green plants has become widely appreciated.
