TitlePereira, Herbert Charles: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his work on the water relations of tropical soils, and for his part in organising research on the renewable resources of tropical Africa. His studies of the water budget of cultivated soils improved farming efficiency and broadened understanding of plant/soil/water relations. Later, he measured the effects of land use changes on forest hydrology and on water supply in large catchment areas, and sought interpretation through measurements of energy and water budgets. The experimental design and the techniques are widely acclaimed, and the scientific results are already a very valuable part of world hydrological knowledge. He demonstrated the risk of degeneration of soils under unplanned land use, the possibility of a transition from natural vegetation to agriculture without adverse effects on water supply of soil stability, and the potential for improvement of land already eroded.
As Director of the Research Council of Rhodesia, Zambia and Malawi he has built up and led a research team that has contributed much to natural knowledge and to agricultural improvement.
