CitationAddison's researches have been in the areas of surface chemistry, nitrogen chemistry, non -acqueous solvents and the properties of liquid metals, especially of sodium. His work has been of outstanding calibre and originality and has given him a high reputation among inorganic chemists both at home and abroad.
Among his researches, the pioneering studies on the reactions of N2O4 and its use as a solvent, are outstanding. In addition to investigations on the nature of solutions, the work led to the isolation of volatile anhydrous copper (II) nitrate. This discovery opened up a new field of nitrate chemistry of transition and other metals, and the techniques developed by Addison have now been widely exploited.
A major recent interest is liquid metals. The inherent technical difficulties of handling and studying highly reactive air-sensitive liquids such as sodium, had long prevented extensive study, but ingenious apparatus and procedures have been devised by Addison. The physical properties of liquid metals have been studies and he has recently begun to study the interactions of substances, in effect using liquid sodium as a solvent. Many fascinating and potentially important discoveries are beginning to emerge, even though not all of them can be satisfactorily explained with present chemical knowledge.
