TitleDouglas, Alexander Edgar: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his work in infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy, and its astrophysical applications, and for his contributions to our knowledge of the structure of many diatomic and polyatomic molecules. He was largely responsible for the identification of certain interstellar lines as being due to CH+ and for the assignment of the most prominent feature in the spectra of cometary nuclei, the 4050 A group, to the C3 radical. He has developed an elegant method for wave-length calibration in high dispersion infrared measurements, as well as a method of studying the Zeeman effect in the spectra of polyatomic molecules. He has discovered, in addition to C3, several other new molecules not previously observed, viz., B2, Si2, CN+. His work is characterized by his wide knowledge and critical assessment of the whole field of spectroscopy and its relation to other fields of physics. He has an exceptional gift for skilful experimentation.
