TitleJaeger, John Conrad: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationJaeger has achieved high international recognition for his contributions to applied mathematics, geophysics and rock mechanics. He can claim much credit for the general use of the Laplace transformation method, and his work (published jointly with H.S. Carslaw) on 'Conduction of Heat in Solids' is celebrated. In 1953 he established the first Department of Geophysics in Australia, at Canberra, which he continues to direct with great energy and success. In recent years his personal research has been mainly in the fields of geothermics, together with theoretical and experimental studies on the fracture of rocks. This work has led to important results on heat flow values in Australia, on thermal properties of the moon's surface (results which have been widely used by American and Russian space scientists) and on the strength of anisotropic materials.
A list of publications is appended, including the titles of 5 books and 107 papers.
