TitlePartridge, Stanley Miles: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to chromatography and to protein structure. His early work included the first application of paper chromatography for the identification of sugars and of ion exchange chromatography for the isolation of amino acids and specific forms of haemoglobin. These methods were later applied to the study of the structure and biosynthesis of components of animal connective tissue. Among the advances achieved was the elucidation of the structure of covalent cross linkages in the protein elastin. The linkages were shown to be due to two new amino acid isomers, now names desmosine and isodesmosine. These compounds were shown to contain a quaternary pyridine ring and are formed by the condensation of four lysine residues pre-existing in the peptide chains.
