| Citation | Distinguished for his work on learning and other functions of the nervous system. With J.Z. Young made extensive studies of the memory system of octopus. Discovered the effects of the vertical lobe system in painful situations. Proceeded to study mechanisms of olfactory and visual learning in terrapins and frogs. During this work discovered the effect of temperature changes on the synapses of the central nervous systems first of lizards and then of other vertebrates. This led to the discovery of the significance of the changes in fibrillar structure in synaptic terminals. Has recently proceeded to a completely new analysis of the connections in the retina by means of electron microscopy. |
