TitleCarrington, Alan: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to physical chemistry, particularly in the development of electron resonance techniques and their application to the study of molecular electronic structure. In early joint papers he established the electronic configurations of the manganate and hypo-manganate and related ions. Later he obtained detailed spin distributions for the benzyl and tropyl radicals, and was the first to demonstrate the resolution of orbital degeneracy in substituted benzene anions. He pioneered the application of electron resonance to the study of proton exchange reactions. In recent years he has developed powerful techniques, such as Stark modulation, for studying paramagnetic molecules in the gas phase, and has used these methods for determining the bond lengths, dipole moments and other properties of several diatomic radicals in both their ground and excited states. His work is outstanding for its experimental elegance, theoretical insight and clarity of presentation.
