CitationDistinguished for his imaginative and comprehensive work in extending mathematical elasticity theory to give results of practical importance in the analysis of modern aircraft structures, notably by work on static and dynamic plate theory extended to include the effect of (i) stiffening ribs (11) cut-outs (iii) diffusion of concentrated load into sheets (iv) large deflexions (v) buckling and post-buckling (taking plasticity into account) (vi) interactions with thermal stress effects. Modern knowledge in this vas field is well summarized in his book "The bending and stretching of plates", expected to become a classic of its subject.
