| Citation | Dr. A C. Neish, a biologist, is distinguished for his work on the origin of the cell wall and of aromatic compounds in plants and for his contributions to the metabolism of carbohydrates. He showed that shikimic acid was a precursor in lignin biosynthesis and that in the biosynthesis of L-rhamose from D-glucose in buckwheat there is no rearrangement of the carbon skeleton. He was an early worker in radio tracer techniques, using C-14, and has combined chemical ingenuity with his biological background in solving many problems in plant and bacterial biochemistry. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and was Merck Lecturer for the Chemical Institute of Canada in 1957. He is at present a member of editorial boards for "Phytochemistry" and the "Canadian Journal of Botany", and is a member of the Canadian National Committee of Biochemistry.
