TitlePosnette, Adrian Frank: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his studies of virus diseases of orchard crops and soft fruit, and for his contributions to the control of disease and the breeding of superior varieties. In Ghana he showed that viruses were the cause of devastating diseased of cocoa, identified the vectors in an insect group not previously known to transmit viruses, and devised control measures. He demonstrated hybrid vigour in cocoa and bred high yielding types that are now widely grown.
In Britain he has investigated the incidence of virus diseases of fruit crops and the epidemiology of virus vectors. He has demonstrated the widespread infection of commercial crops, and has applied methods for thermotherapy whereby viruses may be eliminated from totally infected varieties. He has pioneered the establishment and certification of virus free stocks, whereby large increases in fruit production are now maintained.
