CitationAs Research Director of I.C.I., is responsible to the I.C.I. Board for R. & D. policy throughout the Company, and is the functional head of the biggest chemical research organisation outside the U.S.A., with expenditure of over £30m. p.a. A professional research chemist with 26 of his 33 years in the Company spent in doing, supervising or directing research. At Dyestuffs Division in the 1940's as head of Exploratory Research, he along with other (then) young section heads (e.g., F.L. Rose, F.R.S.) lifted the standards of conduct of industrial research to "publication acceptance" level. Later the Research Department under his directorship was responsible for many original contributions such as the Procion (reactive) dyes, and radical innovations in the fields of polymers (nylon and 'Terylene') and chemical intermediates. President of The Association for Science Education for 1969; Vice-President, Society of Chemical Industry, and member of British National Committee for Chemistry.
