CitationDistinguished for his researches on trilobites particularly those whose exoskeletons he has freed completely from rock matrix. Has travelled widely in Europe and North America to study fossils in the field and in museums. His work is characterized by precise descriptions and excellent illustrations; it has produced better understanding of trilobite morphology, growth stages, phylogeny, taxonomy, numerous spatial and temporal distributions of taxa enabling deductions to be made concerning migration and the configuration of zoogeographical provinces. A significant result of his detailed stratigraphical work in north and central Wales, in western Newfoundland and other parts of eastern North America is the greater precision that it as given to the correlation between Ordovician strata in Britain and North America. Has worked effectively on brachiopods and graptolites; currently studying Burgess Shale arthropods of British Columbia. Was years allowed him to study physiography in China (Szechuan).
