TitleBirch, Bryan John: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to analytic number theory, to the arithmetic theory of forms, and to the geometry of numbers. His solution of Waring's problem in algebraic number fields, with a number of unknowns independent of the field, is a notable advance; and his investigations into the solubility of homogenous Diophantine equations have added greatly to our knowledge. In collaboration with Swinnerton-Dyer, he has formulated conjectures concerning elliptic curves which have provided the basis for many researches now in progress.
