TitleBoys, Samuel Francis: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed. The name given on the certificate is Samuel Frank Boys with the comment that the name should be Francis instead of Frank. A birth certificate is attached.
CitationS.F. Boys' work has been devoted to the methods of obtaining atomic and molecular wave functions and of making calculations using them. He has also been concerned with solving the necessary integrals and with employing high-speed computers. He led the way in obtaining proper calculated wave functions for polyatomic molecules and he has recently devised a new method which allows most successfully for electron correlation. Using this he has calculated the ionisation potential of the neon atom with an error of only 0.05eV.
His methods have elegance and power and his ideas have had a great influence on workers throughout the world who are interested in the application of quantum theory to atomic and molecular structure. His reputation internationally is extremely high.
