TitleParke, Mary: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDr Parke is distinguished for her researches on algae.
Her earlier work contributed substantially to the systematics and morphology of brown and red algae and her thorough investigations of Laminariea and Fucus were among the first quantitative approaches to the understanding of seaweed growth. She is now the outstanding worker on marine flagellates. Her use of culture techniques combines with meticulous observation of living material and skilful light microscopy has led, not only to the description of many new species, but to the first proper understanding of the life cycles of such important forms as the inshore coccolithophorids and Halasphaera and to the recognition of two new classes of algae - Prasinophyceae and Haptophyceae. Her cultures are employed extensively by others and her collaboration with Professor Manton has led to major contributions on the fine structure of flagellates.
