TitleBolton, John Gatenby: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationBolton made the first optical identifications of radiosources. The Crab Nebula in the galaxy and Centaurus A, associated with NGC 5128, the first extragalactic identification. He is well-known as an instrument designer, having built the Owens Valley Observatory of the California Institute of Technology. His recent work has been much concerned with a systematic programme for identifying the sources of the Parkes catalogues at frequencies 4008 MHz and 2700 MHz. Bolton has observed many of these sources optically and has obtained the largest extragalactic redshift so far measured in the Southern hemisphere.
